Integrating ethnomathematics approach in teaching school mathematics.Jaya Bishnu Pradhan - 2023 - Prometeica - Revista De Filosofía Y Ciencias 27:400-409.
The teacher is one of the key factors in the transmission of curricular objectives to their students. Their knowledge and positive attitude toward students' ethnomathematics and its pedagogical approach play an important role to make classroom teaching culture friendly. This paper is intended to explore the in-service teachers’ knowledge of ethnomathematics and perception on the integration of the ethnomathematics approach in their teaching with respect to the demographic factors of in-service teachers such as gender, academic status, teaching experience, teacher training, (...)

The Racializing Womb: Surrogacy and Epigenetic Kinship.Jaya Keaney - 2022 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 47 (6):1157-1179.
In gestational surrogacy arrangements, the womb is often figured as a holding environment that brings the child of commissioning parents to fruition but does not shape fetal identity. This article probes the racial imaginary of such a figuration—what I term the “nonracializing womb”—where gestation is seen as peripheral to racial transmission. Drawing on feminist science studies frameworks and data from interviews with parents who commissioned surrogates, this article traces the cultural politics of the nonracializing womb, positioning it as an index (...)

In search of religious individuals’ career success pattern: “to be rich but not only for me”.Jaya Addin Linando & Wolfgang Mayrhofer - forthcoming - Asian Journal of Business Ethics:1-28.
The present study examines the nexus of religiosity and two career-success elements: positive impact and financial success. The cross-sectional analysis from 985 individuals of various religious backgrounds in Indonesia reveals that collectively religiosity positively relates to the importance of both positive impacts and financial success. Positive impact importance also positively relates to financial success importance, and it partially mediates the relationship between religiosity and financial success importance. The partial mediation indicates that when religious individuals aim for financial success, they will (...)

The Reproductive Bodies of Postgenomics.Jaya Keaney & Sonja van Wichelen - 2022 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 47 (6):1111-1130.
In this Introduction, we present a collection of articles under the topic “the reproductive bodies of postgenomics.” Through individual and collective research, the articles explore—sociologically, ethnographically, and philosophically—how bioscience in the postgenomic age is changing our understanding of reproductive bodies, and more broadly, how it is challenging existing ideas of heredity, embodiment, kinship, and identity. Feminist and postcolonial theories of technoscience are at the heart of this collection, and our aim is to further biosocial thinking while being cognizant that practices (...)

Engaging the students of technology in an ethical discourse in the information age: thoughts of Wiener and Gandhi.Manju Dhariwal, Ramesh C. Pradhan & Raghubir Sharan - 2010 - Acm Sigcas Computers and Society 40 (3):62-71.
This paper is about making the ethical discourse relevant to the students of technology in the present age of information. Information ethics is already a part of the present day engagement with information technology at all levels. This encourages us to carry forward the ethical discourse further by bringing in the moral thoughts of Wiener and Gandhi. Both Wiener and Gandhi lived in the age of technology, but both rebelled against it for basically moral reasons. Wiener is the founder of (...)

Single-Channel Speech Enhancement Techniques for Distant Speech Recognition.Ramaswamy Kumaraswamy & Jaya Kumar Ashwini - 2013 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 22 (2):81-93.
This article presents an overview of the single-channel dereverberation methods suitable for distant speech recognition application. The dereverberation methods are mainly classified based on the domain of enhancement of speech signal captured by a distant microphone. Many single-channel speech enhancement methods focus on either denoising or dereverberating the distorted speech signal. There are very few methods that consider both noise and reverberation effects. Such methods are discussed under a multistage approach in this article. The article concludes with a hypothesis that (...)

Adolescent girls’ health, nutrition and wellbeing in rural eastern India: a descriptive, cross-sectional community-based study.Kelly Rose-Clarke, Hemanta Pradhan, Suchitra Rath, Shibanand Rath, Subhashree Samal, Sumitra Gagrai, Nirmala Nair, Prasanta Tripathy & Audrey Prost - 2019 - BMC Public Health 19 (1):673.
India is home to 243 million adolescents. Two million of them belong to Scheduled Tribes living in underserved, rural areas. Few studies have examined the health of tribal adolescents. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the health, nutrition and wellbeing of adolescent girls in rural Jharkhand, eastern India, a state where 26% of the population is from Scheduled Tribes. We aimed to identify priorities for community interventions to serve adolescents and their families. Between June 2016 and January 2017, interviewers (...)

Why Class Formation Occurs in Humans but Not among Other Primates.Sagar A. Pandit, Gauri R. Pradhan & Carel P. van Schaik - 2020 - Human Nature 31 (2):155-173.
Most human societies exhibit a distinct class structure, with an elite, middle classes, and a bottom class, whereas animals form simple dominance hierarchies in which individuals with higher fighting ability do not appear to form coalitions to “oppress” weaker individuals. Here, we extend our model of primate coalitions and find that a division into a bottom class and an upper class is inevitable whenever fitness-enhancing resources, such as food or real estate, are exploitable or tradable and the members of the (...)

Is a Brief Online Booklet Sufficient to Reduce Fear of Cancer Recurrence or Progression in Women With Ovarian Cancer?Poorva Pradhan, Louise Sharpe, Phyllis N. Butow, Allan Ben Smith & Hayley Russell - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Background: Fear of cancer recurrence or progression is a common challenge experienced by people living with and beyond cancer and is frequently endorsed as the highest unmet psychosocial need amongst survivors. This has prompted many cancer organizations to develop self-help resources for survivors to better manage these fears through psychoeducation, but little is known about whether they help reduce FCR/P.Method: We recruited 62 women with ovarian cancer. Women reported on their medical history and demographic characteristics and completed the Fear of (...)
